The Heart of a Shelter Volunteer
Sometimes we get so busy with the hustle and bustle of everyday life that we become overwhelmed and lose a sense of balance. That is when we need to step back and see what is important. Is it a new car, is it a vacation, or is it something as simple as laying on the sofa relaxing.
For a volunteer, the up most importance is making a difference in the lives of those we encounter. As a volunteer, we want to make a not so nice world a little brighter. We meet abandoned animals who become our best friends. We look forward to seeing them as much as they look forward to seeing us. We share a walk, we sit in the sun and enjoy the fresh air, we give belly scratches and treats. That shared time, every week is a time when the outside world disappears; a time when best friends can savor the moment. We help build self esteem, we help build trust, we help make a confusing time a little easier. Most importantly, we show these abandoned dogs human kindness and love. Over the years, I have built bonds with so many pups. There were times, I left in tears wishing I could do more. Some days are easier then others, but as a volunteer I will not let the abandoned dogs down. I will always be there for them until their special someone comes. Volunteering was the best decision I have ever made. I have found my purpose as well as my balance.
Please consider volunteering at a local shelter... it will change your life... it did mine!
